I picked up this book some time ago, as I had heard it was an excellent book on handling trauma that shook faith. It's by a rabbi, Harold S. Kushner.
I was wondering if anyone else had read it and had thoughts on the ideas discussed in the book (ie, the idea of an all-powerful vs. an all-loving God)
I personally found the book to be incredibly helpful in my reconnection with my faith, and would strongly recommend it to anyone who has suffered heartache or hardships, or to anyone who is just interested in reading another theory on God and religion.
Another question to ask is why do good things happen to bad people? I havn't read the book though. I love reading other commentaries and books by multiple authors, but the most important thing to keep in mind is to always read them through the lens of the bible, and what the scripture, in context, have to say about God, whether we are comfortable with it or not. I say that because, everybody is comfortable with an all loving God, but not everybody is comfortable with an all powerfull, sovereign God of the universe. It's true that God is love, and God is powerful, but we can't limit him to those atributes. God's primary atribute, above all else is his holiness. If we keep in mind God's holiness, a lot of things begin to make sence. God's holy love can co-exist with God's holy wrath, and God's holy mercy can co-exist with God's holy judgement. But whether the question is why do bad things happen to good people? or why do good things happen to bad people? we can be sure to know that God is in control, and all things work together for the good of those who love Him. God bless
